Life Drawing: Using Charcoal and Chalk

For this lesson, I have continued to practise drawing the human body. From my previous life drawing lesson, I mainly focused on using charcoal when producing my drawings. But for this lesson, I have learnt how to use chalk effectively as well.

For my first sketch, I have used charcoal only. I like this piece of work because the proportions of the body seem correct. Also, I like how the charcoal appears faint. I believe that this makes my piece of work effective as it makes the line work appear delicate. I started to add shadows onto this piece and I do think that I could added more shadows in to add more tone.

For this second piece of work, I got shown how to use chalk effectively so that it can suggest lighting. I believe that this drawing is not the most successful piece. I believe this is because I applied too much chalk. Also, another reason why I think that my drawing was not successful is because the proportions are not correct. For example, I think that the legs have been drawn too short.

For my last drawing, I was given the task to produce a piece that contained both charcoal and chalk. I believe that this drawing was the most challenging as I had to think about the posture of the body as the model was sitting down. Some elements of the drawing I did find difficult to draw. For example, drawing the angle of the arm. However, I still think my drawing is successful because I have made light and dark areas into shapes.

Overall, I think this lesson was beneficial as it has allowed me to try using different drawing materials whilst learning how to separate and join together the elements of shadows and lighting.
